Reconnecting... is the first of the new major studies
which help to define land planning and wise land use for the
future of the San Gabriel Valley of Southern California.
Increased building, development, and population pressures
within the Valley have been exacerbated by an absence of
current, regional planning documents for the San Gabriel
Valley (SGV). Reconnecting is an American Planning
Association (APA) Award Winner (2001).
Reconnecting..., the first of the SGV land use planning
documents for the new millennium, offers a great variety of
usable topics and information to assist in providing cities,
organizations, nonprofits, agencies, land use groups and
citizens with a valuable new educational tool. Outcomes
anticipated include wiser decision-making processes, multiple
approaches to regional planning, and balanced perspectives for
designing projects with more sustainable principles and
economic viability. The document is the first substantial
study and comprehensive collection of planning concepts, plus
new data and research focusing on the San Gabriel Valley since
the 1930s landmark studies of the Olmstead Brothers. Findings
and recommendations by the outstanding graduate research team
offer new perspectives and new hope for preservation and
prosperity in the SGV.
Reconnecting... is user friendly with follow-up
recommendations for case study examples and implementation.
Reconnecting... is usable for city planning decisions and
workshops, grant writing resources, community master plan
development, classroom curriculum, and armchair reading.
Reconnecting... is an independently-sponsored regional study
generated within the SGV. Reconnecting is the baseline
document for the new, multi-stakeholder, multi-year Upper San
Gabriel River Watershed Management Plan/Committee, funding
provided through Prop 13 (2001). Other grants are being
funded using this significant tool, baseline resource and
database.
Reconnecting... was featured in the August 2000 Special
Report/Series on the San Gabriel River by the SGV Newspaper
Groups. Commissioned for and introduced in the study is the
original landscape painting, "The River" (July 2000),
authentically representing the San Gabriel River. Nationally
known Wildland Artist Fariad has captured beyond belief the
timely renaissance mood that is spreading throughout the
Valley.
